Court Typist and District Court English Typing
District Courts and High Courts across India recruit typists, stenographers and clerks requiring English typing with speeds between 30-45 WPM. Legal English passages — court orders, judgments, cause lists — are used.
Speedy Shorthand provides legal English typing passages matching High Court and District Court exam patterns — the same content type you face on exam day.
SECTION 3 — HOW WPM IS CALCULATED
How English Typing Speed (WPM) Is Calculated in Government Exams
Understanding the WPM formula helps you set a realistic practice target.
Standard WPM Formula (SSC, Railway, DSSSB): Net WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) − Error words ÷ Time in minutes
Example: You type 350 words in 10 minutes and make 8 errors. Net WPM = (350 − 8) ÷ 10 = 34.2 WPM — just below SSC CHSL cutoff.
AHC RO/ARO Marking Formula:
- Marks = (Correct words ÷ Total passage words) × 50 − (Errors × 0.1)
Key insight: Reducing errors matters more than increasing raw speed. A candidate typing 38 WPM with 10 errors scores lower than one typing 35 WPM with 2 errors. Always prioritise accuracy over speed in practice.
SECTION 4 — WHAT KIND OF PASSAGES
English Typing Passage Types in Government Exams
Knowing what kind of English to expect in the exam helps you practice the right material.
Legal English (AHC and Court Exams)
Passages drawn from court judgments, legal notices, cause lists, constitutional provisions and administrative orders. These contain formal legal terminology — jurisdiction, plaintiff, defendant, writ petition, order, judgment, suo motu, interim relief.
Practice with legal passages gives a major advantage — candidates who have never read legal English make significantly more errors on unfamiliar words.
Administrative English (SSC, Railway, DSSSB)
Passages from government circulars, official correspondence, policy documents and administrative reports. Vocabulary includes: department, ministry, notification, amendment, regulation, circular, directive, establishment, recruitment, designation.
General Formal English (Mixed Exams)
Some exams use general formal English — speeches, editorial content, reports on government schemes. Formal sentence structures, no slang, no colloquial language.
Speedy Shorthand practice passages cover all three types — matched to the specific exam you are preparing for.
SECTION 5 — TIPS
English Typing Tips to Reach Your Target Speed
Start with home row — always The home row is ASDF on the left and JKL; on the right. Every finger has its assigned keys. Never move your hands from home position — all other keys are reached by stretching fingers, not moving hands. This single habit is the foundation of fast, accurate typing.
Eyes on the screen, never the keyboard Looking at the keyboard while typing breaks your flow and limits speed. Cover the keyboard with a cloth for the first week if needed. Discomfort now becomes speed later.
Practise with legal and formal passages from day one General English typing practice will not prepare you for the vocabulary in AHC or SSC passages. Practice with formal, administrative and legal English from your first session.
Use timed tests matching your exam duration If your exam is 20 minutes (AHC RO/ARO), practice in 20-minute blocks. If your exam is 10 minutes (SSC CHSL), practice in 10-minute blocks. Endurance and concentration are built by matching the real duration.
Track errors — not just speed After every session, note the specific words where you made errors. Are they long words? Legal terms? Words with double letters? Work on those specifically. Error patterns repeat — fixing them gives faster improvement than general practice.
Set a daily minimum, not a daily maximum Commit to 20 minutes of practice every day without exception. Consistency beats intensity. 20 minutes daily for 30 days is far more effective than 3 hours on weekends.
